About the Department

The Department of Culture and Heritage was established to provide leadership within the Government of Nunavut in the development and implementation of policies, programs and services aimed at strengthening the culture, language and heritage for all Nunavummiut. It serves the public and the Government of Nunavut with headquarters based in Iqaluit, Baker Lake, Igloolik, and Kugluktuk.

Culture and Heritage will achieve its mission through: providing leadership within the government by means of the promotion of Inuit Societal Values through the application of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit approaches to work; promoting the use of Inuit language in the workplace and throughout the territory; promoting access to information and resource materials in Nunavut’s official languages in all communities; enhancing public library services across Nunavut; assisting non-profit, community based individuals and organizations in cultural, language and heritage activities and encouraging ongoing dialogue between Elders and youth and the government
