A PERSON ROBBED OF SLEEP IS SOMEONE ROBBED OF HAPPINESS

Sleep is an important part of human health. Not only is it important for our energy levels during the day, but it is also vital for correct brain function. A lack of restorative sleep is not normal – it is unhealthy and potentially dangerous. For some people, it is debilitating. About one in four Canadians are unable to get the recommended minimum of 8 hours sleep every night.

All sleep disorders result in a lack of deep, restorative sleep despite the sufferer believing he or she has slept for a full 8 hours. This is why most sleep disorder sufferers do not even know they have a problem until someone tells them.

Sleep disorders can impact an entire household. Chronic sufferers of OSA can snore loud enough to wake their entire family. When this happens, children can start failing at school, spouses can start failing at work, and the family can come under strain.

THE CAUSES OF SLEEP DISORDERS

There are several common sleep disorders:

The first step in finding the right solution is determining the causes of your non-restorative sleep patterns.

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

A person with OSA suffers a more significant narrowing of the airway that sometimes causes a complete reduction of airflow to the lungs. The brain will recognize the lack of air and trigger an arousal response. People with OSA will either partially or completely awaken during these periods.

SNORING

A small amount of airway blockage will result in snoring. Snoring is the vibration that results from air passing through a partially narrowed airway. Snoring is sometimes a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and should always be discussed with your family physician.

RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME (RLS)

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also called Willis-Ekbom disease (WED), affects about 3% of Canada’s adults. It is a serious neurological disorder that causes uncontrolled movement of the legs and is usually accompanied by creeping, tugging, or pulling sensations. It generally occurs during sleep, so it can interfere with the quality of life of sufferers.

PERIODIC LIMB MOVEMENTS (PLM)

PLM affects a small proportion of the Canadian adult population. It is a serious neurological disorder that causes uncontrolled movement of the legs and is usually accompanied by creeping, tugging, or pulling sensations. It generally occurs during sleep, so it can interfere with the quality of life of sufferers.

INSOMNIA

The Canadian Psychological Association estimated that at least 10% of adults have chronic insomnia, that is, they find it extremely difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. Common reasons for insomnia are stress, caffeine, nicotine, depression, or pain. Like other sleep disorders, insomnia reduces quality of life, ability to focus, and energy levels. People with insomnia tend to fall asleep when stationary as they are sleep deprived.

BEDWETTING

Bed wetting is a sleep disorder affecting children that can be treated by a sleep specialist.
